SPELLBOUND LEAD AUDITIONS
The Spellbound Spotlight
Step into the story and help bring this year’s magical production to life. We’re casting for character leads in our 2025 concert Spellbound, and we’re looking for confident, expressive students who are ready to take the stage in a whole new way.
Whether you're dramatic, playful, thoughtful, cheeky or mysterious, this is your chance to shine in a speaking role, be part of our studio-wide story, and bring the magic to life for audiences across all three shows.
Audition Process
Round 1 – Video Audition
Students select the character that most inspires them and rehearse the short script excerpt. You’ll find character descriptions and age guides on this page below.
Then:
Record a video reading the script. Speak clearly, use your face and voice to express the emotion and character.
A parent or sibling may read the other lines off-camera if it’s a conversational script.
Nothing fancy required — a phone recording is perfect.
Email your video to: claire@danceenergystudios.net.au
Submission Deadline: Tuesday 15th July at 5:00pm
Round 2 – In-Person Callbacks
Callbacks will be held in Week 1–2 of Term 3 at either Maroochydore or Caloundra studio (location TBC). Callbacks will take place in small groups and may include:
Script reading
Mime work
Basic staging exercises
We want to see how students interact, take direction, and work as an ensemble. Callback emails will be sent by Thursday 17th July.
Key Commitments
Students cast in character roles must be available for the following:
Rehearsals every 2–3 weeks in Term 3, increasing to weekly in Term 4
One weekend in Term 3 for audio recording (offsite, date TBC)
Costume fitting and potential character photoshoot (Term 3)
Dress rehearsal and all three full cast shows on Sunday 23rd November
All 3 concerts on Saturday 29th November
Possible extra dress rehearsal in early November
Arrive early on show day and be available between shows for character meet and greets and photo opportunities with audience members
Important Notes
All audio will be pre-recorded in Term 3 — students won’t need to memorise the full script, but must learn to mime convincingly to their own voice.
Characters will be named after casting, to best match the student playing them.
Students must be at least 9 years old. Age recommendations are noted for each character.
Not all students will be cast. Some may be offered understudy or alternate roles. Selection is based on a variety of factors including expression, vocal clarity, reliability, and suitability for the story and team dynamics. We understand this can be disappointing and we thank everyone who auditions for being brave and giving it a go.
Audition Scripts: Spellbound Lead Characters
Each script is designed to run under 20–30 seconds with space to show tone, expression, and character. A Parent or sibling may read the off-camera line to help prompt the scene. Performers should focus on clear speech, character expression, and emotional timing. Small gestures or physicality (like miming a door or reacting with the eyes) are welcome.
AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS
Before starting your script, please begin your video with a short introduction:
"Hi, my name is [First Name], I’m [Age] years old, and I’m auditioning for the role of [Character Description, e.g. 'the Younger Sibling']."
Then begin your scene. You may have a parent or sibling read the off-camera lines if needed. Focus on expression, clear speech, and bringing the character to life!
“YOUNGER SIbling”
Age range: 9–12
Tone: Optimistic, heartfelt, quietly brave
Acting Tips: Show hope and determination. This character believes in something others have forgotten, she’s gentle but won’t back down. Try using your eyes to show you really believe something magical is there.
READER (off-camera – Older Sibling):
"You really believe there’s magic in that dusty old thing?"
YOUNGER SIBLING:
"Yes! Just because you stopped believing doesn’t mean I have to. I felt something when I touched it — like a spark. Like it was waiting for someone to remember."
(beat)
READER:
"You’re being ridiculous. It’s just a door."
YOUNGER SIBLING:
"Maybe to you. But I think… deep down, you want it to be real. You just don’t remember how to believe anymore."
(Optional: look back at the ‘door’ or gently touch it)
“OLDER SIBLING”
Age range: 12+
Tone: Cool, grounded, slightly closed off
Acting Tips: Start emotionally distant. Your voice should be calm and sharp, with just a hint of annoyance. Try not to show emotion, until maybe a flicker of care comes through at the very end.
READER (off-camera – Younger Sibling):
"Why won’t you just try to believe? You used to love this stuff."
OLDER SIBLING:
"Yeah, when I was seven. Stories and fairy doors and invisible friends... I grew up. That’s what happens. You should try it sometime."
READER:
"You don’t even care anymore, do you?"
OLDER SIBLING:
"I care about things that are real. Homework. Deadlines. The fact that the world doesn’t run on glitter and feelings. That’s not being mean — it’s just growing up."
“FAIRY GUIDE”
Age range: 13+
Tone: Excitable, magical, warm and welcoming
Acting Tips: Be playful and curious. Speak as if every word is filled with wonder. Smile with your voice, and keep your energy light and sparkly, but with just a hint of mystery.
READER (off-camera – Younger Sibling):
"What is this place?"
FAIRY GUIDE:
"Oh, this? This is the in-between — where wishes wait and wonder lives. But not everyone can see it. Only the ones who still believe."
(leans in slightly, playful)
"You opened the door — so now it’s your turn to discover what’s inside. But be warned... magic follows the brave."
(smiles knowingly)
"Come on. There’s someone I want you to meet."
THE TIMEKEEPER
Age range: 13+
Tone: Gentle, grounded, wise
Acting Tips: Keep your tone soft and steady. You’re calm, kind, and speak with quiet certainty — like someone who’s seen a thousand years go by. Slow down your speech just a little. Let the quiet moments land.
READER (off-camera – Younger Sibling):
"Can you help me? I need to bring her back."
THE TIMEKEEPER:
"That choice isn’t yours to make. But you can remind her."
(pauses, voice calm)
"This world can’t survive without belief — not just hers... yours too. That’s what holds it together."
(gentle gaze)
"You’ve come farther than most. Trust that. And when the time comes, trust her."
(soft smile)
"Go on. The path will know where to take you."
SPRIG & THISTLE (PIXIES)
Age range: 9+
Tone: Cheeky, energetic, playful — the comic relief
Acting Tips: Have fun! These two love to talk fast, finish each other’s thoughts, and be the funniest ones in the room. Use silly expressions or a mischievous smile. Clear timing is key, don’t rush the joke.
READER (off-camera – Younger Sibling):
"Who are you two?"
SPRIG:
"I’m Sprig, that’s Thistle. We’re pixies."
THISTLE:
"Legendary pixies, thank you very much."
SPRIG:
"We guard the forest, confuse the squirrels, and occasionally help lost humans — when we’re in the mood."
THISTLE:
"Or when we’re bored. Like today."
SPRIG (leans in):
"We know all the secret paths. And also where the good snacks are."
THISTLE (deadpan):
"One of those is more important."
BOTH:
"Guess which."
